Who are we and what do we do?

The Chess Tigers are Kennard students who are enthusiastic about chess. They are from all grade levels and range in their enthusiasm from introductory students to expert tournament fans.

The membership is fairly evenly divided by grade and gender. Though our membership is limited, please contact Ed Papes as we will add new students is an opening is available. Our meetings are usually evenly divided between chess strategy lessons and "skittles" games.

All of our club members are members of the United States Chess Federation and attend USCF sponsored tournaments. We are members of the Gateway Chess League for both tournament and league participation. We almost always attend their events.

Where and when do we meet?

We meet on Tuesdays after school in the Kennard CJA Library immediately after school until 5:30 p.m.  Parents/Guardians MUST sign their children out at the end of each practice.

Attention Chess Parents -
Please Complete the Volunteer Information

Each parent/guardian must volunteer for at least two activities per child in the chess club. Click here to pick five possible dates to fulfill this requirement.

Volunteer duties for practices include arriving prior to the start of practice (4:08 p.m.) and having the children sign-in.  Volunteers will be responsible for handing out information with regard to upcoming events.  Also, a parent must sign their child out at the end of each practice.  Volunteers will be responsible for obtaining a signature.  Likewise, parents are expected to arrive by 5:30 p.m. for dismissal of each practice and sign their child out to ensure the safety of the children.

Volunteer duties for tournaments include arriving early to obtain tables for the Kennard Chess Tigers and reserving them, maintaining the sign-in sheet and keeping order among the children.  They are also responsible for passing out information regarding upcoming events.  There is local and some long-distance travel involved with tournaments.

How well are we doing?

Please check back for results of the 2006/2007 tournament.

Is there a fee to join?

A registration fee of $30 is required of each player. In addition, each team member must join the United States Chess Federation prior to their first tournament. There is a separate student fee of $19 per child to join the USCF.  Click here for registration form.

Who should I contact for more information?

T-Shirts will be available early in the season for new club members to wear to tournaments.  T-Shirts are available in both short- and long-sleeved styles.  These are the same T-Shirts that were purchased during the 2006-2007 season.  These shirts may be worn as part of the Kennard CJA uniform.

A new design will be available as we approach the State Tournament the later part of the season.  To request pricing and order information on Chess Tigers T-Shirts, contact Lisa Selligman
