Frequently Asked Questions

Who Should Complete a Science Fair Project? All students in grades 2-5 are required to complete a Science Fair Project as part of their Science Lab homework.
Do Kindergarten and First Grade students participate in the Science Fair? Participation is voluntary for Kindergarten and First Grade.
What is the purpose of completing the Science Fair Plan? Science Fair protocol requires authorization of the specific project plan, before work on the project begins. Although we are not that rigid for the Kennard Fair, completing the Science Fair Plan is your opportunity for individual feedback on your plan, before you begin investing time and money and effort into your project. Additionally, although Ms. Williams coaches approximately 300 students for the Science Fair, Science lab instruction is her number one priority.
Who will review my plan? The Science Lab teacher will review and make written comments and suggestions on each plan she receives.
What if I don't understand a section? You may turn in an incomplete plan early. Again, this is the chance for feedback. Corrections and additions can be made, and the plan resubmitted.
Can I turn in my plan early? Yes. The Science Lab teacher can begin coaching students, at their request, at the end of the school year for the next Science Fair. The sooner your plan is received, the sooner you get feedback.
Why do you recommend the Experiment Study over any other type of project? First, the experiment model is the only model taught in depth in the Science Lab. Second, it is the easiest type of project to complete consistent with the Science Fair protocol. For example, a model is not just a scale model of something real. You still have to identify the IV, DV, CV and control. You still need a Problem, Hypothesis and Conclusion. Also, a model must not be a purchased kit.
How can I get help? As part of Science Lab instruction, students will be given assistance in planning their projects. The Science Lab teacher will hold workshops for parents in the science lab - Dates TBA.
You are also invited to attend the GSLSF workshop - Date and Location to be announced.
